Christoph Görke: SMD

The way in which a society shapes public space reveals a lot about values, well-being and technological progress. In this context, Christoph Görke uses enormous LED screens that gradually populate popular places and transit zones. The title of his project is ‘SMD’, which also happens to be an acronym for a component of these screens themselves – ‘surface-mounted device’. Over the course of several months, the artist would like to stay on the innogy SE premises and focus on a detailed and enormous replica of one of these units, which will be made of waste-paper composite material and will be free of any electronic elements. The resulting creation will be a motionless monolith, which, as a mere copy and thus devoid of functions, presents a different form of representation. Above all, it will raise questions regarding the responsibility for resources, production processes and distributed goods.
